Southend Drama Society presents The Christmas Spirit.
Southend Drama Society is proud to present The Christmas Spirit by Frederick Stroppel.
When Death comes calling on Christmas Day at the home of Julia Dowling, the only sensible option is to invite him for dinner. He’s not the usual type of spirit Julia likes to enjoy with her turkey, but the alternative seems to be dying – and she definitely doesn’t want to do that. There’s no way Death will take her once he understands how awful her untimely demise would be for her family. She’ll keep the fact that they can’t stand each other to herself for now.
She’ll put up a tree, hang mistletoe, roast a goose and show him her picture perfect family Christmas. Her children will come, her sister and, of course, the vicar – she is (for today anyway) an upstanding member of the Church. All she has to do is ensure that her visitor doesn’t spot the cracks in her family facade. It’s foolproof! What could possibly go wrong?

Southend Drama Society presents Educating Rita.
Southend Drama Society is proud to present Educating Rita by Willy Russell.
Life-long academic Frank is a tutor of English and a frustrated poet. His disillusioned outlook on life has driven him to drink and bury himself in his books. To fund his thirst, Frank agrees to take on an Open University student. Enter Rita – a forthright hairdresser who knows she’s out of step with her family and friends. There’s more to life than cutting hair and Rita is not prepared to settle for what she’s already got. After weeks of cajoling and proving her hunger to learn, Rita slowly wins over Frank with her innate insight and refusal to take no for an answer.
Their relationship as teacher and student blossoms, giving Frank a new sense of life and Rita the knowledge she so desperately craves. Willy Russell’s Educating Rita offers a witty and poignant look at a working-class woman’s efforts to better her social circumstances through the pursuit of a university degree – and the potential pitfalls it exposes.
