Saint Joan.
Southend Drama Society Presents Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw.
The powerful and moving story of Joan of Arc, a young French peasant girl propelled into power by divine voices during the Hundred Years War.
Her faith and charisma won battles but provoked jealousy and suspicion amongst the French nobility and clergy.
Captured and sold to the English for an exorbitant sum, she was tried by the Inquisition for heresy and witchcraft, refused to recant her beliefs and was burned at the stake.
Shaw's depiction of Joan is of a visionary who is betrayed by the people she sought to save.
