Southend Drama Society presents

The Sweet Science of Bruising by Joy Wilkinson.

Violet Hunter, Matty Blackwell, Polly Stokes, and Anna Lamb, combat domestic abuse and class struggles. They fight for independence, finding strength in sisterhood and empowerment. They are looking to escape from the constraints of society through the dangerous world of underground women's boxing, exploring themes of freedom, abuse, ambition, and female solidarity in 1869 Victorian London.

The play blends historical reality (inspired by true women's boxing) with powerful drama. It features physical theatre, intense fight scenes, and strong female roles, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking. It resonates with modern audiences by showing timeless struggles against oppression.

In essence, the play tells the story of women fighting for their lives and futures, both in and out of the boxing ring, as they challenge the restrictive Victorian world. “Sweet Science" is a nod to boxing's nickname, used ironically to highlight the violence and brutality these women endure and overcome.

Tickets Standard: £18, Concessions: £16
