The 2006 Southend Drama Festival came to a close last night, with two excellent one act plays bringing the competition to a strong conclusion. The Wednesday Players were up first with Work in Progress - a play that follows an author writing a story while also discovering some truths about himself. Following Work in Progress, Southend Drama Society took to the stage with their production of Easy Stages - a one-act play that follows an amateur dramatics group during one of the final rehearsals for their production of Hamlet. The play recieved a very positive response from the audience on the night, with everyone on and off the stage giving their very best. Competition throughout the week was particularly intense, with all entires of a particularly high standard this year. Southend Drama Society's Brian Williams and Sharon Goodman were noted by the adjudicator for their performances on the night. Sadly, Southend Drama Society were not the recipents of any of the awards on the night, but we certainly came away with a production that we could all be very proud of. Congratulations go to our own Sharon Goodman for winning Best Director with Belfairs VI Form's You Can Call Me Friend.

| On the final night we were treated
to Wednesday Players performance of Work in Progress with a
very clever screen projection of the authors word processor in time to the
action on stage and finally comedy verging of farce with Southend Drama
Societys Easy Stages which had memorable performances
from Brian Williams and Sharon Goodman.
The standard was some of the highest ever seen presented by amateur groups in Southend and in a time in which many local festivals are being forced to close down, will assure the continuance of a healthy cultural event in the amateur theatre calendar.
