Southend
Drama Society 60th Birthday Celebration Past and present members of Southend Drama Society came together at the Westcliff Hotel last night to mark the occasion of the Society's 60th anniversary. The celebration event was attended by Rowena Alexanda, the daughter of the Society's founders and a long-time member in her own right. Rowena was kind enough to share tales of the Society's early days, as well as some fascinating photos from her personal collection. The event was also attended by the Society's President and Vice President - the Rt. Hon David Amess MP and Margaret Pay. A full report on the evening will be published here as soon as we can get our hands on some photographs - if anyone who attended has any photos they would like to share, please email them in. In the meantime, here's the Webmaster's promised and highly-anticipated acceptance speech for his Lawrence Award. "Thank you to the rest of the Management Committee for nominating me for the award (and for keeping it a secret) and to everyone who uses the website or joined the Society because of it. Thanks also to Laura for spending many a night as an internet widow while I potter about on the PC."

Blackadder's
Christmas Carol... and other tales Rehearsals for Blackadder's Christmas Carol continue! Sets are being built, costumes are being made and Baldrick's trousers are getting... well, smellier by the day. Tickets are on sale now from the Box Office, so get yours before we sell out! Otherwise you'll be more disappointed than a than a very disappointed lemming who has just received a letter from the Disappointed Society for Lemmings, advising that they regret he cannot join their group on account of not being disappointed enough, which ironically, he then was.

Our
Next Production: Blackadder's Christmas Carol... and other tales Celebrating our 60th anniversary in style, Southend Drama Society are extremely proud to announce that our next production will mean the return of Edmund Blackadder to Southend in November 2006! Blackadder's Christmas Carol follows our sell-out run with Blackadder in Summer 2003 and our winning adaptation of the Blackadder episode Ink & Incapability at the Southend Drama Festival and All England East Division Final in 2004. For this production, the same Southend Drama Society team will be recreating the Blackadder magic for the stage once again, with adaptations of Beer from Blackadder II, a return of the award winning Ink & Incapability from Blackadder the Third, and rounding off with Blackadder's Christmas Carol. Once again, royalties for the rights to perform this play will be donated to Comic Relief in accordance with the wishes of writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. Our production of Blackadder's Christmas Carol will take place between 23rd and 25th November 2006. To read details of our original Blackadder production in 2003, click here. To read about our award winning run of Ink & Incapability in 2004, click here. License pending.

Concert
in the Park Southend Drama Society recently made it into the local press, with some of our members being photographed taking a break from rehearsals from The Admirable Crichton and going to the annual Concert in the Park, which takes place every June in Southend's Priory Park. The concert, which brings live orchestral music to the masses, is organised by the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill. Click on the picture opposite to see some of our number 'sampling' some ale. Click here for a write-up of the day by the local press. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it!
