The Admirable Crichton, by
J.M. Barrie, tells the tale of Crichton, a butler for a family of well-to-do
aristocrats. The butler is the efficient master of the household, but
keeps his place in the social structure of early 20th Century England.
When the family and their servants
are shipwrecked and marooned on a desert island, only the lowly butler
has the skills and resourcefulness to survive.
In a very short time, the social
order is completely reversed, with Crichton the Governor of the group
of survivors and his former masters now his lowly servants.
Will the group survive? Will
they be rescued? How would the group reintegrate into society if they
did return?
